The second phase of the major Ochoco Preserve Project continues to reshape the face of the Preserve. You'll recall that this year we are focusing on creating new channels and floodplains along Ochoco Creek and the Crooked River and establishing locations for future trails and educational sites.

Highlights from efforts this past month include:

  • Finishing construction on a portion of the new Crooked River alignment.
  • Finalizing the construction of habitat log jams in the lower portion of the Crooked River (soon to be filled with water!).
  • Starting excavation of the restored alignment of Ochoco Creek.
  • Shaping hills and other features around waterways.
  • Rescuing and moving fish from construction areas to safe temporary locations.
  • Watching newly constructed channels fill with water, since the groundwater level is so close to the surface!
