Hopkins-Young Special Management Area is a working forest near Crescent, OR (see map below). The Land Trust worked with Crown Pacific in 2000 to protect seven parcels of land totaling 3,045 acres. These forested lands are now scattered within the Gilchrist State Forest. The Hopkins-Young Special Management Area is home to a wide variety of wildlife species including mule deer, woodpeckers, hawks, songbirds, and more.

      Old growth ponderosa pine groves: Hopkins-Young Special Management Area contains areas of old growth ponderosa pine that are home to variety of wildlife species.

    • Outstanding wildlife habitat: Along the Walker Rim, forests of ponderosa pine, sugar pine, Douglas fir, and white fir provide excellent habitat for white-headed woodpecker and Northern goshawk.

    • Working forest: Hopkins-Young Special Management Area is a working forest. It is actively managed to provide for timber harvest while also ensuring that stands of large-diameter ponderosa pine, sugar pine, Douglas fir, and white fir remain standing for the benefit of wildlife.

    Hopkins-Young Special Management Area protects and enhances old growth forest for the benefit of wildlife, specifically white-headed woodpeckers and Northern goshawks. The Oregon Department of Forestry manages these special parcels within the Gilchrist State Forest in a manner that protects these attributes and species.

    Hopkins-Young Special Management is named in memory of Forest Service ecologist Bill Hopkins and Ted Young, a forest manager for Crown Pacific.
